A little while back, I blogged about a Serbian man who was found dead in the bear cage at the Belgrade zoo. The zoo director was quoted as saying: "There's a good chance he was drunk or drugged. Only an idiot would jump into the bear cage." At the time I commented that we would treat such a story differently in America.
Well, it looks like we now have a chance to prove the theory. Though the details are still fuzzy, it seems that at least one of the victims in Tuesday's tiger attack at the San Francisco zoo taunted the animal, and allowed it to escape by dangling his leg into the enclosure. Now, of course I wish that nobody had died; but if the victim actually did dangle his leg into the cage, I dont see how this case if very different from the proverbial case of playing with fire. More sensational perhaps, but not very different. Im just really glad that other rule-abiding visitors to the zoo were not injured after the tiger's escape.
